History

After a first meeting in Göteborg (Sweden), in June 2008, representatives of six leading sports newspapers gathered in Barcelona (Spain), on September 29, 2008, and decided to create the International Association of Sports Newspapers (IASN), to defend and promote the values of sport and the interests and freedom of the sports press.

The six founders were: L'Equipe (France), La Gazzetta dello Sport (Italy), Lance! (Brazil), Marca (Spain), Mundo Deportivo (Spain), and Olé (Argentina).

They were later joined by the new full, associate, individual, and honorary members that form the association today.

Santi Nolla, the director and board member of Mundo Deportivo, was appointed the first President of the IASN. Rosarita Cuccoli, an Italian-born Parisian and a specialist in international relations, was appointed Secretary General.

The motto of the association - "Sports press for sports in society" - was chosen to emphasize the importance of sport in conveying values in society, and therefore the key contribution that sport information brings in that respect.

IASN international secretariat is based in Paris.
