IASN at Advertising Summit of the media industry

The IASN will be presenting the advertising strategies of the sports press at the upcoming Advertising Summit that WAN-IFRA organises in Hamburg (Germany), on the premises of the Axel Springer group, Germany's largest newspaper and third-largest magazine publisher as well as one of the leading European media enterprises. With over 230 newspapers and magazines, as well as its holdings in television and radio stations, Axel Springer is active in a total of 36 countries.

The Advertising Summit will be moderated by Constantine Kamaras, Vice-Chairman of 24 Media, Greece's leading online media network both in terms of total users and advertising revenues. Kamaras was previously Publisher & CEO of Sport.gr, one of the largest sports portals in Greece.

IASN Secretary General Rosarita Cuccoli will provide an overview of how sports media use sport content to increase advertising revenues and sales.

Gazzetta dello Sport for technology in football

IASN founder member Gazzetta dello Sport has addressed FIFA's President Joseph Blatter and the members of the International Board an appeal inviting the organization to consider the introduction of technology in football, further to refeering errors in the latest World Cup (TM).

The letter has been published by IASN's and other sports newspapers worldwide. The initiative has gathered 50,000 signatures among Gazzetta.it visitors alone, in Italy.

Marca in Spain and Gazeta Sporturilor in Romania, both members of the IASN, are among the sports newspapers that have adhered to the initiative.

European Athletics - UNESCO Young Leaders Forum

IASN secretary general Rosarita Cuccoli spoke about the role of sports media in contributing to develop tomorrow's sport and community leaders, and the work of the IASN and its members, at the European Athletics - UNESCO Young Leaders Forum.

The event was held from 27 to 29 July 2010 in Barcelona, Spain, alongside the European Athletics Championships. Panelists included:

Hansjorg Wirz, President of the European Athletics Association;

Sergey Bubka, former Olympian and World Champion, UNESCO champion for sport, and EA Council Member;

Pilar Alvarez-Laso, Representative of UNESCO Director-General;

Gabriela Szabo, track and field champion and a winner of 21 gold and 12 silver medals, who now serves as the President of the Romanian Athletics Federation;

Christophe Dubi, Sports Director for the International Olympic Committee;

Rosarita Cuccoli, Secretary General of the International Association of Sports Newspapers (IASN);

Pere Alcober i Solanas, Representative of the City of Barcelona;

Steve Cram, middle distance champion in the 1980s - he set world records in the 1500m, 2000m and the mile - and the first man to run 1500m in under 3.5 minutes. Cram is now the UK ambassador for the worldwide IT partner for the International Olympic Committee.

Mundo Deportivo, one of the founders of the IASN, is a media partner of the European Athletics Championships 2010.

Sport and media debate from Sport and Citizenship

The latest issue of the Sport and Citizenship journal is dedicated to the relationship between Sport and Media.

Sport and Citizenship is the European think tank on sport and an historical partner of the IASN. It is supported, among others, by the European Commission and UEFA.

How are media telling sport stories? What are the new challenges, the new opportunities? The latest issue of the journal provides a rich overview of opinions and suggestions from eminent personalities.

Contributors include Laurent-Eric Le Lay, CEO & Chairman of Eurosport Group; Andreoulla Vassiliou, EU Commissioner for Education, Culture, Multilingualism, Youth and Sport; Nicolas Maingot, Acting Director, Communications and Public Affairs at FIFA; Ingrid Deltenre, Director General of the European Broadcasting Union; Bernard Lapasset, President of the International Rugby Board; and many others.

Depor wins the Effie award in the "Media" category, in Peru

Diario Depor, the sports daily of El Comercio group, in Peru, and a member of the International Association of Sports Newspapers, was awarded the prestigious Effie award in the "Media" category. The award ceremony took place in Lima, on 28 May 2010.

Organisers of the Effies specifically rewarded Depor for the success of its launching campaign - the newspaper was only created in 2009 and immediately became extremely popular in the country, especially among young readers. Thanks to the marketing strategy that the newspaper has developed and implemented with Publicis, with which it shares the award, the newspaper has rapidly reached 36% of market presence, compared to an established objective around 20%.

El Comercio group is one of the oldest media groups in the world. Its flagship publication, the daily newspaper El Comercio, was founded in 1839, that making it the oldest newpaper in Peru and one of the oldest newspapers in Castilian language.

Emmanuel Petit supports the Football Reading Passport

Emmanuel Petit is the "football reading champion" supporting the World Football Reading Passport, the joint project that the IASN and WAN-IFRA recently launched in Madrid, on 5 May 2010.

Petit has represented France at the international level, earning 63 "caps" (selections) and winning the Euro 2000 as well as the FIFA World Cup™ in 1998, in which he scored the third goal in France's 3-0 victory in the final against Brazil. The goal happened to be the 1000th in the history of the French Football and the last World Cup goal of the 20th century. He has played for Monaco, Arsenal, Barcelona, and Chelsea.

Throughout his career, Petit has used his celebrity to promote sport and the values it conveys as an educational tool. He joined UNICEF's international roster of football champions for children and UNESCO's actions for literacy.

"Sport helped me as a child to accept others, their differences, their race", he explained as a key reason why he supports the World Football Reading Passport. "It helped me accept the rules and respect authority."

Today, Petit continues to contribute his experience as a football expert for the French and international press, including France Télévisions and L'Equipe TV.

Gazzetta dello Sport's 4 millions readers

According to the latest figures provided by Audipress, La Gazzetta dello Sport has not just confirmed its positioning as the most read daily newspaper in Italy. Its daily readership now approaches 4 millions (3,995,000).

This is the highest readership ever reached by a daily newspaper in the country.

Gazzetta's total of 3,995,000 readers is followed by La Repubblica with 3,209,000 readers and Corriere della Sera with 2,870,000.

The Audipress data was based on two surveys conducted in September to December 2009 and January to March 2010.

La Gazzetta dello Sport is one of the founding members of the IASN.

O JOGO's conferences

IASN member newspaper O Jogo, in Portugal, is celebrating this year its 25th anniversary. On this occasion, a series of conferences is being organised by the media on sports news, in collaboration with the University of Oporto.

The first conference, hosting Gianni Valenti, Deputy Director of La Gazzetta dello Sport, one of the founding newspaper of the IASN, took place on 23 March 2010 and focused on the challenges that sports media are currently confronted with.

On 6 April, Andrew Jennings talked about "Transparency in Sport Organization".

On 3 May, conferences dealt with the "Application of New Technologies in Sports Communication" and "Research on Media Coverage of the 2008 Olympic Games", with Emilio Fernandez Pea.

To conclude, on 25 May next, the debate will focus on "Sports Content in the Digital Age and Research on Sports and Media", with Raymond Boyle, of the University of Glasgow.
